Gears whirred, and he was hoisted high into the air

8. Bad Dreams (are made of this)

Trying to figure out what made Dragon tick was exhausting work so George lay on his bed, closed his eyes and tried to imagine how it would feel to be a cold and indifferent Dragon. Before long, sleep lulled him into a disturbing dream…

In the dream, George strolled briskly and happily to work. As usual, he noticed how quiet it was without the birds singing, but he didn’t care because he couldn’t wait to start his day. He greeted the friendly guard at the factory gate before walking up to his locker and slipping into his overalls. Next, he marched to the centre of the massive hangar and clambered into the harness hanging from the ceiling.

With a thumbs-up, he signalled to the hoist operator, and gears whirred into action, lifting him high into the air, before assistants pulled him towards the colossal body of a headless dragon. When hanging directly over it, George gave another thumbs-up, and the gears lowered him slowly into the dragon’s “cockpit.” The dragon’s massive head was then drawn over him, and George felt a shiver of excitement.

George looked around the dashboard and flipped a switch which caused the monster to lurch into life. A second switch triggered a blast of fire from its mouth and third caused a deafening roar that made his assistants cover their ears. George felt a delicious rush of adrenaline as he pulled a final lever, and the monster stumbled outside into the smoggy sunlight.
