Feeding Dragon is a messy business

3. Enter the Dragon

This is Dragon. He’s 50 metres tall and weighs 20,000 tonnes.

And, to make things worse, when he’s angry (which is often), he breathes fire. But then, what do you expect from a Dragon?

About 250 years ago, Dragon showed up in what’s now called The Black Country. It wasn’t called that at the time, buthis fiery breath and all the coal he ate soon covered everything with a thick black soot. When he was a baby, he used to live under an iron bridge, but now he’s an adult and he’s taken over the whole world, kicking out all the other monsters along the way.

Living the high life, Dragon does whatever he wants, which mainly consists of scoffing vast quantities of coal and oil, that the humans must provide to keep him growing. In the past, he’d worked the humans to death, but more recently, he’s discovered they work harder when they have hope, so he lets them dream about retirement while they work. As you can see, he isn’t a very nice dragon, but dragons rarely are — apart from maybe Puff and the ones that live on the moon making soup.

But there’s just one more thing I need to mention. Thanks to this diet of fossil fuels, Dragon also produces enormous amounts of toxic farts that are slowly killing the planet. But he doesn’t care too much about that. He’s too busy enjoying himself.
