"Call it enlightened self-interest if you like, ut there's still a chance we can save our skins"

17. (Picking Up) Good Vibrations

“Cheers to that,” George agreed, still feeling like a fraud. He could still remember the thrill he’d felt inside the dragon suit, so he asked, “But won’t folks still want to buy fancy cars and exotic holidays?”

“Maybe,” Alice nodded, “but will we still want new cars if we’re no longer keeping up with the Joneses? Especially if we know we’ll have a better chance of surviving the next 50 years?”

“That’s true.” Agreed, George, turning this idea carefully over in his head.

“New cars aren’t really all that important when the planet’s at stake, not to mention our children’s futures,” Alice added.

“Well, when you put it like that…” George agreed.

“And think about all the perks of a Dragon-free world.’ She continued. “If you’re not constantly having to feed him, you’ll have more time for your kids and hobbies and golf handicap,”

“I love it!” Said George, now nodding emphatically.

“And instead of buying cheap crap that ends up in landfills, we’ll be making quality stuff from sustainable sources and feeling the satisfaction of a job well done. That’s what we can expect now that Dragon is no longer breathing down our necks 24/7.”

George was sold on this idea and excited about the possibilities ahead.
